Daniel Deronda is the only Eliot book set in her own Victoria era. The novel plot is wound around two stories linked by the title character of Daniel Deronda himself. Raised by the wealthy Sir Hugo Mallinger, it is thought that Deronda is his illegitimate son. Daniel forms an attachment to a selfish society maiden called Gwendolen Harleth who's family soon lose their wealth and Gwendolen marries Henleigh Grandcourt to save herself from a poor future.

Deronda saves a young Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth from suicide and befriends her, lodging her with the family of his friend, and aids her in searching for her family. This search introduces Daniel to the Jewish community of London. Deronda's friend proposes marriage to the virtuous Mirah, an offer she rejects despite the advantages it offers. This shows Deronda a sharp contrast between the two women in his life, Gwendolen, and Mirah. After the death of her husband Gwendolen hopes for Deronda to claim her again. But who will he choose, and what is the secret of his birth, where does he come from?
